I first read this book a few years ago and I absolutely loved it. I also read book 2 and enjoyed it just as much, but for some reason, I never actually picked up book 3! So, I thought I would have a re read of the first two books, so that I could finally pick up number three and then pick up the new instalment in this world – The Becoming of Noah Shaw! I loved this book just as much as the first time I read it and I cannot wait to move on to book 2!Mara Dyer is a completely unreliable narrator. She suffers from PTSD after an accident that happened, so she hallucinates a lot and struggles to figure out what is real and what isn’t. As a reader, this makes it difficult to determine what is real and what isn’t and as soon as you think you have it figured out, something else happens to bring it all back into question. This left me completely on my toes, even though I read the book already.I forgot just how great a character Noah is. He tries to help Mara, even though he knows he doesn’t have to and he sticks by her no matter how crazy she gets. I do wonder from where he knows her, because that was a detail that I completely forgot about and picked back up after my re read, so I am looking forward to seeing how these two are connected – where one character remembers and the other one doesn’t.I wish we saw more of Jamie. I loved his character and the way he tried to help Mara based on his own experiences, even if they were slightly jaded or misplaced. He was an honest character and someone who really was a friend to Mara from the very beginning of the book and it was sad that we didn’t get to see much of him because of what happened – I am hoping that he will turn up some time later in the story again.I loved the fact that Mara had an actual family at home who worried about her. A lot of books, whether contemporary or fantasy, often have missing family members or none because of certain circumstances etc. So it was a nice change to see a set of parents, together who, whilst they may have argued, cared about Mara and what happened to her and were willing to protect her – even if Mara thought they were being too overprotective. Daniel is a great support system for Mara, as well as being the annoying brother sometimes, which balanced out his actions some.The plot kept me on my toes, largely because we didn’t know what was real and what wasn’t and the fact that certain things started happening without any idea as to why etc. I loved the way that everyday news helped make the plot what it was and it was done a subtle way that crept up the on the reader, rather than just being there in your face.All in all, I loved this book as much as I loved it the first time! I am absolutely looking forward to re reading book two and I cannot wait for my copy to get here so that I can! I gave this book 5/5 stars.
Ich fand den Einstieg und Verlauf der Geschichte zwar nicht sehr spannend, aber Langeweile kam beim Lesen nie auf. Es handelt sich um den Auftakt einer Reihe und die Geschichte muss sich erstmal aufbauen. Weshalb im ersten Band nicht all zu viel passiert. Die Stimmung ist generell sehr ruhig gehalten. Man erfährt Stückweise was sich an dem Abend, als Maras Freunde starben, zugetan hat und diese Rückblenden sind super eingebaut und mit der Realität von Mara verknüpft. Das hat mir wirklich gut gefallen! Michelle Hodkin hält sich gekonnt zurück und lässt die Bombe auf den letzten Seiten erst platzen und das Buch noch zum richtigen Pageturner werden.Das Ende hat mich so unfassbar vom Hocker gehauen. Mit dieser Wendung habe ich absolut nicht gerechnet - mir stand die Kinnlade offen.Die Beziehung zwischen Noah und Mara fand ich anfangs ziemlich unpassend und Noah war mir richtig unsympathisch. Das hat sich zum Schluss dann jedoch extrem geändert. Noah ist das beste Beispiel dafür, dass man Menschen und Dinge nicht aufgrund von ihrer äußeren Fassade verurteilen und mal einen Blick dahinter werfen sollte. Alles in Allem kann ich "The unbecoming of mara dyer" jedem empfehlen, der auf mystische, düstere und geheimnisvolle Geschichten steht.

Genau, ich rede von den book boyfriends! Ich habe gerade gesehen, dass es bei Goodreads sogar ganze Listen zu denen gibt. ^^ Einer, der anscheinend zu den beliebtesten gehört, ist ein gewisser Noah Shaw, der in einem gewissen Buch über eine gewisse Mara Dyer vorkommt und mir schon vor Ewigkeiten über den Weg gelaufen ist.Näher als dieses Buch werde ich mich in die Welt der Thriller vermutlich nie wagen. Aber wenn man absolut kein Thriller und Horror-Fan ist, aber mal etwas Nervenkitzel will: Mara Dyer ist dafür genau die Richtige. Die Spannung wird dadurch gehalten, dass man nie weiß, was wirklich real ist und was nur Maras Kopf entspringt. Kennt ihr das, wenn man seinen eigenen Augen nicht trauen kann? Beim Lesen ging es mir genau so. Dann gibt es noch ein dunkles Geheimnis in Maras Vergangenheit, an dass sie sich nicht erinnern kann und irgendwie geschehen um sie herum gelegentlich merkwürdige Sachen. Und jetzt stellt euch vor, ihr habt keine Ahnung, ob das wirklich alles geschieht. Der Autorin sind diese ganzen Verwicklungen und Verzweigungen in diesem Konzept so meisterhaft gut gelungen.Einer der Funken, die meine Liebe für dieses Buch immer wieder angeheizt hat, sind die Dialoge. Sie sind sicher gar nicht so selten, wie es mir vorkommt, aber die Dialoge waren so erfrischend neu. Viele Gespräche in Büchern verlaufen schlussendlich oft ähnlich, die hier nicht. Ich hatte das Gefühl, die Autorin nimmt jedes Klischee, das ihr einfallen könnte und jeden Dialog, den man erwarten würde, und dreht es ins genaue Gegenteil um.Mara hat zwei Brüder und ich mochte die Beziehungen zwischen den Geschwistern sehr. Die Autorin hat die Figur irgendwo zwischen „Sie lieben sich und kümmern sich um einander“ und „Sie streiten sich mal und/oder sind verschiedener Meinung“ abgesetzt und den Nagel damit auf den Kopf getroffen.Und dann ist da natürlich noch die Liebesgeschichte. Nun, Noah trägt seinen Titel zu Recht. Und auch Mara ist eine tolle Protagonistin. Beide für sich mag ich schon sehr, aber zusammen... Es gibt Paare, die gehören einfach zusammen und die zwei sind so eines.
